A path worth of a king

Snowshoe hike through the protection forest dominating the village of Vers le Bois, in the municipality of Valsavarenche. We take the path created by the king Victor Emmanuel II to reach his hunting lodge in the village of Orvieille (2.165 masl). The route back follows the local trail n.7 connecting Orvieille to the village of Créton (1.613 masl), from which we get to the starting point. During the hike, we discover the winter aspect of mountains, we look for the footprints left on the snow by the inhabitants of the wood, we explain the adaptation strategies of animals and plants to cold winter weather and we give you the tools to learn how to move safely in a winter environment: excursion planning, basics of snow science, field study of avalanches.

 In short:

  • Estimated journey time: about 8 hours (lunch stop included)

  • Meeting point and time:  9.00 a.m. at the car park opposite to the city hall in the village of Dégioz (1.545 masl)
