This two-day itinerary, with overnight at Vittorio Sella hut, in the municipality of Cogne, takes place in Valnontey and offers a close-up perspective of the glaciers of the Gran Paradiso, especially of the majestic glacier of Tribulazione situated at the base of the mountain with the same name. The Sella hut is a privileged place for observing chamois and ibex grazing; during the traverse from the Sella hut to the cabins of Herbetet we can  meet them while they drink from the lake of Loson. After we reach the cabins of Herbetet, we go up on the opposite side to reach Alpe Money across the magnificent morainic amphitheatre of the head of Valnontey, cut through by the impetuous creeks originating from the glaciers of Gran Crou and Money. Finally, from the Alp Money our gaze gets lost at the outline of the Gran Paradiso mountain chain, from Grand-Sertz, to Herbetet, to the Piccolo Paradiso  and the Gran Paradiso, and finally looking south, to the Testa di Ceresole,  the Testa della Tribolazione e Testa della Valnontey.

Explanation of the itinerary, check of the equipment and start of the hike

First day: Valnontey – Sella hut

We start from the hamlet of Valnontey (1.666 masl), we leave on our right the Alpine Botanical Garden Paradisia and follow the regional trail Alta Via n°2 which coincides, in this stretch, with the old royal hunting mule track. After several turns through a wooded area, we reach the bridge on the creek Gran Loson at about 1.950 masl and go up the steep wooded side on the orographic right until we get to the alpine pastures characterising the last part of this itinerary. From here we can enjoy a fantastic view on the Gruppo degli Apostoli (group of the Apostles) and the glaciers of the head of Valnontey. Once we reach the bridge at 2.260 masl, we go back on the orographic left and after some turns get to the Vittorio Sella hut, situated in a gorgeous lush basin at 2.584 masl.

Second day: Sella hut – Cabins of Herbetet - Alp Money – Valnontey

From the Vittorio Sella hut we take the path n°18B leading south towards the head of Valnontey. Once we leave behind the small lake of Loson, where we often meet the ibex drinking its water, the trail becomes more demanding and exposed (we must overcome some stretches equipped with fixed ropes and iron rungs set into the rock) until it reaches the cabins of Herbetet (2.441 masl), where the Park rangers' hut is situated. We then follow the old royal hunting track to the hamlet of Les Cheséres, at 1.240 masl, on the Valnontey floor. We climb the large morainic amphitheatre characterising the head of the valley, crossing the impetuous creeks of glacial origin flowing to the valley floor, until we reach the Alp Money, situated at 2.334, in the middle of the alpine pastures from which we can enjoy a beautiful view on the summit of the Gran Paradiso (4.061 masl). In the last stretch of the itinerary, we follow a narrow winding path running down to the valley floor of Valnontey at 1.790 masl. We walk on an easy flat trail and get to the village of Valnontey (1.666 masl), starting point of the first day trek.
